Jamshedpur, Oct 28: Five wild elephants which have parted their way from a big herd are creating obstacles in communication between Chakulia and Karakocha in Chakulia block in Ghatsila sub-division of the East Singhbhum district since Saturday morning.
The five elephants which include a calf have parted way from a herd of 27 migratory elephants and laid seize of the Chakulia-Karakocha road.
As a large number of villagers used to commute through the said road to Chakulia, the people have stopped moving through the road in fear of lurking danger due to the presence of the wild elephants there.
Moreover, as the human habitat is close to the stretch where the elephants are gathered, the villagers are also wary of their paddy field which may be invaded by the visiting tuskers.
The remaining 22 wild elephants of the herd which is believed to have come from the neighbouring Bengal are anchored in the Chakulia jungle.
Jamshedpur divisional forest officer, Mamta Priyadarshi confirmed about the entry of the elephants’ herd from Bengal.
“We are aware of the entry of a big herd of elephants in Chakulia since early morning today. To save the lives of people, we have decided to start a drive from 7.00 pm today,” said the DFO while talking to lagatar24.com.
Priyadarshi said there is a Quick Response Team which will not only work to drive the five elephants towards the jungle but also provide crackers to the villagers to prevent the tuskers from coming closer to the villages.
