New Delhi, March 28: Rahul Gandhi issued a letter on Tuesday to Mohit Rajan, the deputy secretary at the Lok Sabha secretariat, in which he expressed gratitude for the cancellation of his lodging at 12, Tughlaq Lane. This occurs one day after the Lok Sabha Housing Committee requested that the disqualified MP vacate the government-allocated home in Lutyens’ Delhi by April 22.

He was allotted the bungalow after his election as a Lok Sabha MP in 2004.

“As an elected Member of the Lok Sabha over the last four terms, it is the mandate of the people to which I owe the happy memories of my time spent here,” reads the letter.

“Without prejudice to my rights, I will, of course, abide by the details contained in your letter,” he added.

Rahul Gandhi also said that he owes the ‘happy memories of my time spent here’ to the mandate of the people.

After being found guilty of criminal defamation in 2019 and receiving a two-year prison term, Rahul Gandhi lost his eligibility to serve as a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament. A complaint was made over Rahul Gandhi’s statement on the Modi last name. If a higher court does not vacate the Congress leader’s conviction and punishment, he would be unable to run in elections for eight years.

He must leave his official residence within a month on the date of the disqualification ruling, per the guidelines.

Congress leaders and party members around the nation have rushed to the streets in protest at his disqualification, calling it a ‘dark day’ for Indian democracy.
