Ranchi: A shocking allegation has surfaced from Birsa Munda Central Jail, where businessman Kamal Bhushan’s murder case witness, Munavvar Afaq, is allegedly being harassed by prison staff. His father, Afaq Ahmad, has submitted a complaint to the Home Secretary, seeking urgent intervention to protect his son.

Allegations Of Assault And Extortion

According to the complaint, Munavvar Afaq was kept in a secure cell on court orders, away from other inmates. On August 26, after being taken to RIMS for treatment due to neurological and gastroenterological issues, he was reportedly assaulted upon return by jail staff Uday Karmali (small jamadar) and guard Ramesh Ram. They allegedly snatched four rupees given to him for hospital expenses and subjected him to physical violence. Later, he was confined to the “Pagla Cell” under “degree pack” punishment, where he has been denied both food and medicine.

Threats And Human Rights Concerns

The complaint further claims that jail staff demanded ₹1 lakh for his release from the punishment cell and threatened to transfer him to another prison if he failed to pay. The witness, already struggling with health problems, is reportedly suffering from dizziness and nosebleeds due to the mistreatment. His father has termed the ordeal as a severe violation of human rights that worsens his medical condition.

Appeal For Government Action

Seeking urgent relief, Afaq Ahmad urged the Home Secretary to initiate an immediate inquiry into the incident and ensure his son’s safety. He stressed that the threats and harassment not only endanger his son’s life but also compromise the integrity of a key government witness in a sensitive murder case.
