New Delhi, March 10: Xi Jinping, the president of China, was elected to a historic third term on Friday. The National People’s Congress (NPC), the rubber-stamp legislature of China, voted overwhelmingly to elect Xi Jinping as president.
According to a Reuters report, there was no other contender in the race. Xi was also chosen to lead China’s Central Military Commission for a third term. Han Zheng was chosen as the new vice president, and Zhao Leji was chosen as the new parliament chair. They both belonged to Xi’s former group of party officials at the Politburo Standing Committee.
Xi Jinping was re-elected as the Communist Party’s general secretary for a record-breaking third five-year term in October of last year. After a string of victories, Xi is strengthening his position as the nation’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.
It is significant to note that in 2018, Xi Jinping personally lifted the restriction on the number of presidential terms. Hence, Xi Jinping will be able to continue leading China until his resignation, demise, or removal.
