GURUGRAM: Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal announced on Wednesday that the company had received over 10,000 applications for its Chief of Staff position, despite the role sparking widespread criticism on social media.
The job, headquartered at Zomato’s Gurugram office, drew backlash due to its unconventional terms—no salary for the first year and a required fee of Rs 20 lakh from candidates. Goyal revealed these updates as the application window was set to close at 6 PM today.
Position Details and Criticism
In a post on X, Goyal outlined the eligibility criteria and responsibilities for the Chief of Staff role. Described as a position for those with “hunger,” “empathy,” and “common sense,” the job notably excluded prior experience or a sense of entitlement as requirements.
While candidates would not receive a salary during the first year, Zomato pledged to donate Rs 50 lakh to a charity chosen by the selected individual—an amount equivalent to a standard annual salary for such a role. From the second year onwards, the company promised a competitive salary exceeding Rs 50 lakh annually.
However, the offer quickly went viral, with many labeling it “exploitative” and a “bad idea.” Critics accused Zomato of promoting a culture that undervalues employees under the guise of ambition and charity.
Social Media Backlash
Users on X heavily criticized the offer, questioning the ethics of requiring candidates to pay Rs 20 lakh to secure an unpaid position. The lack of initial compensation, even for a high-profile role, was described as an “unrealistic” and “elitist” approach, limiting access to those with financial privilege.
Goyal’s Response
Goyal defended the job listing by emphasizing the opportunity for personal growth and social impact through the charity donation. He also expressed surprise at the overwhelming response, despite the negative feedback online.
