Beijing, Jan 8: At least 17 people were killed and 22 were injured in a road traffic accident in east China`s Jiangxi province on Sunday, said state media.
The accident occurred in Nanchang County, and the cause behind the mishap has not yet been determined.
“The accident caused 17 deaths, 22 people were injured, and the injured have been sent to the hospital,” reported state broadcaster CCTV, citing local authorities.
About an hour after the news broke, the Nanchang County traffic police provided drivers with tips to travel safely. The police said the area was experiencing ‘foggy weather’.
“Driving visibility is poor, there is low visibility, which can easily cause traffic accidents,” it said.
In a traffic advisory, police urged commuters to pay attention to fog lights and drive carefully, maintain a safe distance from the car in front, avoid pedestrians, and avoid changing lanes and overtaking.
Notably, road accidents are common in China due to a lack of strict safety controls.
In December, one person died during a highway pile-up in central China that involved hundreds of vehicles and was caused by low visibility in fog.
In early September, 27 passengers died when a bus carrying them to quarantine facilities in southwestern Guizhou province overturned on a motorway.
