New Delhi, June 26: At least 17 young people were found dead at a nightclub in a township in South Africa’s southern city of East London, police said on Sunday.
“We got a report about 17 that died in a local tavern in Scenery Park which is based in East London,” a provincial police chief brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana told AFP.
“We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he added.
The victims, according to him, were between the ages of 18 and 20.
Unverified images posted on social media showed bodies strewn around the club’s floor with no obvious signs of trauma.
The city, which is on the Indian Ocean coast and is around 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) south of Johannesburg, was depicted on local television as police officers attempted to disperse a mob of people gathered outside the club.
