New Delhi, June 26: Teesta Setalvad was detained by the Gujarat Police Crime Branch on Sunday in connection with a case involving her NGO, which is accused of providing the police with false information concerning the riots in Gujarat in 2002.
She will be brought before the court today at 3 o’clock by the Gujarat Police, who will ask for 14 days of incarceration because she isn’t helping with the inquiry.
“Former IPS officer RB Sreekumar was arrested yesterday and Teesta Setalvad was arrested today. Forging of evidence and hindering with evidence will be looked into. We will produce both the accused in the court by 3 pm,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Chaitanya Mandlik.
The response came after Union Minister Amit Shah said in an interview with ANI that a Teesta Setalvad-run NGO had given the police false information regarding the riots in Gujarat in 2002.
Setalvad had been transported to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital earlier in the day for a checkup.
In connection with a case involving her NGO, the Gujarat Anti-terrorism Squad (ATS) team detained Setalvad from Mumbai on Saturday. Later that evening, she was transported to Ahmedabad.
Teesta Setalvad was brought yesterday to the Santacruz police station by the Gujarat ATS squad.
