New Delhi, March 2: An SC/ST court found one guilty and exonerated three defendants in the Hathras rape-murder case on Thursday. Out of the four accused – Sandeep (20), Ravi (35), Luv Kush (23), and Ramu (26) – the court held that Sandeep was guilty of the crime.
Notably, a 19-year-old Dalit lady was raped and left with serious injuries in September 2020 at Boolgarhi in the Hathras district of western Uttar Pradesh. The defendants in the case were four Thakurs of the upper caste from the same hamlet. 15 days after her injuries, she passed away while receiving care at the Safdarjung hospital in Delhi.
The girl’s family announced that it would appeal the case to the Supreme Court because it is not happy with the court’s decision.
Massive protests and cries for justice had been brought on by the rape case. Once the authorities removed the woman’s body from the hospital without the family’s consent, the debate also took a political turn. Also, they carried out her final rites in the middle of the night without allowing her family to do so.
