250 killed as earthquake of magnitude 6.1 jolts Afghanistan

New Delhi, June 22:  A strong earthquake in Afghanistan has killed at least 250 people and injured numerous others on early hours of Wednesday, according to the sources of BBC. Social media users posted images of the Paktika province’s destroyed homes, rubble, and people on stretchers.

More than 250 people have already died, and the number of injured people is expected to climb, a local government official told the BBC. About 44 kilometres (27 miles) away from the city of Khost in the southeast, the earthquake occurred.

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, which was cited by Reuters, tremors were felt along more than 500 km of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.

According to the centre, witnesses claimed to have felt the earthquake in Islamabad, Pakistan, as well as Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was a magnitude 6.1 tremor that struck in the early hours of the morning while many people were sleeping. It occurred at a depth of 51 kilometres.
