Manila: A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck the northern town of Bangui in Ilocos province, Philippines, on Wednesday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), raising concerns about aftershocks and potential damage in the affected region.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed the tremor and issued a warning for possible aftershocks. However, there have been no immediate reports of damage.
The Philippines is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity due to tectonic plate movements. Earthquakes are a common occurrence in this region, often prompting warnings and preparedness measures from authorities.
Residents in and around the affected areas have been advised to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
