9 killed after tourist bus falls into gorge in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris, PM announces ex-gratia

Nilgiris, Oct 1: In the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, a tourist bus plunged into a gorge on Saturday, killing at least nine people, police stated.

The bus was travelling from Coonoor to Tenkasi when it was involved in the accident, according to the police. The passengers on the bus were going home after a trip to Ooty.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the fatalities in the bus tragedy and wished the injured people a speedy recovery.

“Pained by the loss of lives due to a bus accident near Coonoor in Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Those injured would be given Rs 50,000,” Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) posted on X.

According to police, the bus was en route from Ooty to Mettupalaym in the Coimbatore district of the Southern state at the time of the accident.

The injured were taken urgently for treatment to Coonoor government hospital.

“55 people were in the bus. 35 people were injured and sent to Coonoor government hospital for treatment by ambulance,” officials said.

According to police, it was discovered during the preliminary investigation that the driver lost control of the wheels and crashed into a gorge at Marapalam in Coonoor that was 100 feet deep.
