Amit Panghal, Shiva Thapa secure place in Indian boxing team for Commonwealth Games

New Delhi, June 2: Amit Panghal and Shiva Thapa, both World Championship medalists, have been selected for the Indian boxing team for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games after winning the trials held here on Thursday. In the trials held at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Panghal, the 2019 world championship silver medalist, secured a position in the 51kg division, while Thapa clinched a spot in the 63.5kg division.

Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg), Rohit Tokas (67kg), incumbent national champion Sumit (75kg), Ashish Kumar (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg), and Sagar (92kg) are the other six boxers who have made it into the Indian team (92kg ) From July 28 through August 8, the CWG will be place in Birmingham.

Panghal won a 4-1 split decision over fellow Services fighter Deepak. He’ll be looking to improve on his silver medal result from the last tournament in Gold Coast.

On the other hand, 2015 world bronze medalist Thapa, who was recently elected to the IBA Athletes Committee, outpunched 2018 CWG silver medalist Manish Kaushik 5-0 to secure his spot at the quadrennial event.

Hussamuddin won 4-1 over 2019 Asian Championship silver medalist Kavinder Singh Bisht in the 57kg division, while Railways’ Rohit won a tough 3-2 decision over UP’s Aditya Pratap Yadav in the welterweight class.

Sumit, Ashish, Sanjeet, and Sagar all dominated their matches, winning by 5-0 margins.

India has placed second in the 2018 edition of the Games, winning nine medals in total, including three golds, as well as silvers and bronzes. Notably, the women’s Olympic trials will take place next week.

Men’s Squad: Amit Panghal (51kg), Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg), Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) Rohit Tokas (67kg), reigning national champion Sumit (75kg), Ashish Kumar (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg) and Sagar (92kg ).
