Ranchi, June 4: Waterlogging continues to be an issue in several parts of the city as the civic body’s deadline for clearing drains before the monsoon approaches. Parts of areas such as Ratu Road and Morabadi have drains which are uncovered and are a matter of concern.

With regard to this, Deputy Mayor Sanjeev Vijayvargiya requested the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) to cover the open drains in the city with concrete slabs as it can cause major accidents.

In a letter to the Municipal Commissioner, the Dy Mayor stated, “There are a large number of dangerous open drains in the city in which many accidents have occurred in the last 3-4 years and people have lost their lives. Therefore, I urge the RMC to kindly cover these drains with concrete slabs before the monsoon so that no such accidents take place.”

In September 2021, A 55-year-old man fell into a drain near Upper Bazaar while returning home from work. Continuous efforts were made by NDRF to search for him but his body was found after days in the Kanke dam reservoir. Many such horrific incidents took place last year due to the negligence of the RMC.

Notably, RMC officials stated that they have taken the suggestion from the Dy Mayor quite seriously and will be covering all the slabs as soon as possible. The process has been on hold due to a lack of funding.

Rajesh Gupta, a resident of Morabadi said that the condition of the drain has been an issue for years and that RMC should take proper measures this year.

“We all know the number of accidents that took place last year due to the open drains in the city. It’s high time that the civic body should take evasive actions and deal with this situation,” he said.

As monsoon is just around the corner, RMC is quite confident that they will cover up the drains before the rain hits the city.
