New Delhi, June 22: The earthquake in the east of the country has left 1,000 people dead and 1,500 others injured, according to Afghanistan’s state-run news agency.
As authorities worked to assist people impacted by Wednesday’s earthquake, the Bakhtar News Agency released this most recent figure. Rescue operations are probably going to be difficult because many international relief organisations departed Afghanistan when the Taliban took control of the nation last year and the U.S. military chaotically withdrew from the longest conflict in its history.
The deadliest earthquake in twenty years rocked a remote, mountainous area of eastern Afghanistan early on Wednesday. Officials issued a warning that the dismal death toll was expected to increase.
The magnitude 6.1 quake that occurred close to the Pakistani border is still mostly unknown, although quakes of that size can do significant damage in areas where houses and other buildings are shoddily built and landslides are frequent.
Pakistan’s Meteorological Department said the quake’s epicentre was in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, some 50 kilometers southwest of the city of Khost. In the province of Khost, structures were also damaged, and vibrations could be felt as far away as Islamabad, Pakistan.
Men transferring individuals wrapped in blankets to waiting aircraft were seen in Paktika footage. Others received treatment on the floor.
