Jamshedpur, June 22: A 28-year-old biker was shot at by unidentified gunmen on Seraikela-Kandra road under the Kandra police station area in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district, about 22 km away from Jamshedpur this afternoon.

The victim who has sustained a bullet injury in the neck was rescued by passersby and was rushed to MGM medical college hospital and later shifted to Tata Main Hospital where his condition is described as critical.

The gun-shot victim was identified as Karim Khan, a resident of Kapali near Mango.

According to sources, the victim was riding back home from Seraikela through the Seraikela-Kandra road at about 1 pm. While he was approaching Kandra, two persons who were also on a bike intercepted him and fired a shot in the neck from close range.

After being attacked, the victim started running towards Kandra leaving his motorcycle abandoned, but having covered a little distance he fell.

Sources said fortunately two lawyers Ambika Sharan Pani and Om Prakash were returning from the Seraikela court. On seeing the youth lying in a pool of blood, the lawyers stopped their car and rescued him. The lawyers subsequently arranged an ambulance and made the victim to be sent to the medical college hospital at Sakchi.

OC, Kandra thana, Shailendra Kumar said the gunshot injured was referred to Tata Main Hospital for better treatment in view of his deteriorating condition.

“From the preliminary investigation, it appears that the attackers were lying in ambush and fired at him having intercepted him at a convenient point on the Seraikela-Kandra road. We are trying to find out those who attacked the biker, said Shailendra. He pointed out the attackers had sped away towards Seraikela after the shooting.

The OC said the victim had put on a helmet adding that had he been without a helmet, the assailants might have shot in his head instead of the neck.
