Imphal, July 2: The death toll in the major landslide at a territorial army camp in Manipur’s Noney district has risen to 20 which includes 15 jawans.

Officials reported that 44 persons are still missing, while 13 Territorial Army members and 5 civilians have so far been saved.

The landslide occurred at the Territorial Army Camp nearby the Tupul yard railway construction site on Wednesday night. Teams from the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, Territorial Army, as well as the central and state disaster forces are working to rescue people who are still trapped beneath the rubble.

“As officials are facing difficulties due to rains and other factors, a Thorough Wall Radar is also being inducted by air to detect the presence of personnel buried in the debris,” an official release said.

N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, visited the spot on Friday with senior military and government personnel. The CM has declared that the families of those who died will receive a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each, while those who were injured will receive Rs 50,000.
