New Delhi: Supreme Court judge Justice Vikram Nath declined to take up a public interest litigation over steep airfare increases of up to 700 percent, remarking “Alright, don’t travel by air. Next case,” when the petition was mentioned before him.

Advocate Calls Air Travel an Essential Service

During the mentioning, the advocate told the court that fares had been raised by as much as 700 percent and argued that air travel is an essential service. The court responded that people should not travel by air and moved on to the next matter.

Plea Cites Dynamic Pricing Surges

The petition says airlines sharply raise fares overnight in the name of dynamic pricing during festivals, holidays and emergencies, and seeks guidelines to address the practice.

Related Petition Already Pending

A related PIL filed by S. Lakshminarayan on the issue is already pending before a bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta.
