New Delhi, July 3: The Department of Food and Public Distribution will host a one-day national conference on the security of food and nutrition in India on July 5.
The conference aims to promote cross-learning, share best practises for programmes under the Public Distribution System (PDS), and increase the emphasis on nutritional security, according to a press release issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution.
In the presence of Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Minister of State (CA, F&PD), and Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State, Union Minister Piyush Goyal will address the conference (CA, F&PD).
Ministers of Food and Civil Supplies from states and Union territories will also attend the conference.
The Ministry stated that the conference’s main focuses would be the discussions on food fortification, food basket diversification, crop diversification, integrated Annavitran Portal 2.0, and reforms in the PDS and storage sector.
Additionally, the best practises used in some of the states will be shared for widespread replication.
The conference will provide a forum for discussion of the opportunities and difficulties for realising the transformation of the nation’s food and nutrition security ecosystem in the genuine spirit of cooperative federalism.
Notably, the largest public food-security programme in the world is India’s targeted public distribution system, which is governed by the National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA).
