New Delhi, July 5: The Election Commission on Tuesday issued a notification for the election of the next vice president on August 6.
According to the notification, nominations must be submitted by July 19 at the latest.
The current vice president’s term ends on August 10 and the next vice president takes office on August 11.
The last day to withdraw name from nomination is July 22. The nomination papers will be examined on July 20.
The election, in which all members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including those who have been nominated, are allowed to vote, favors the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) by a wide margin.
Candidates for the election have not yet been announced by political parties.
Notably, the vice president also serves as Rajya Sabha’s chair. There are 788 members in total from both houses of Parliament that make up the electoral college for the vice-presidential race. The value of each MP’s vote would be equal to one because all electors are members of Parliament, the EC stated in a statement released on June 29.
