Tamil Nadu, July 8: In a case involving disproportionate assets, agents from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption raided 49 properties owned by the former Tamil Nadu Food and Civil Supplies Minister R Kamaraj and his accomplices on Friday.

Authorities assert that between 2015 and 2021, while serving as food and civil supplies minister, the former AIADMK MLA allegedly accumulated assets worth Rs. 58 crores that were out of proportion to his known sources of income.

In this case, R Kamaraj and five other people are mentioned. He is the eighth former minister of the AIADMK who is being investigated by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.

The AIADMK has referred to the action as a “political vendetta” and has stated that they will handle this lawfully. The raids occur while the AIADMK has a leadership crisis.

Due to factionalism that threatened to split the party after the passing of the then-chief minister Jayalalitha in December 2016, Edappadi K. Palaniswamy (EPS) and O. Paneerselvam (OPS) are currently serving as the AIADMK’s coordinator and joint coordinator, respectively. They are doing this in accordance with a ceasefire that was adopted five years ago.

In order to have one top leader, the EPS camp now seeks to modify the party’s bylaws to eliminate the Coordinator and Joint Coordinator positions and reinstate the General Secretary position.

The Madras High Court is currently hearing a request by OPS to halt the meeting, which he claims is against the party’s bylaws. The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the Madras High Court order that prohibited the passing of any unannounced resolutions in the meeting of the AIADMK general and executive councils regarding the issue of single leadership of the party.
