Lucknow, July 11: Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of Alt News, was given a 14-day judicial detention order by the Lakhimpur court on Monday. In November of last year, a lawsuit was filed against Zubair on the grounds that he had incited animosity. On July 13, the court will hear Zubair’s request for bail. Currently, Zubair is being held in Delhi’s legal custody.
On June 27, the Delhi Police detained Zubair for allegedly offending religious sensitivities in one of his tweets. On Friday, Lakhimpur Kheri police handed Zubair with a summons to appear in court immediately after he received an interim bail from the Supreme Court in a case brought in Sitapur for hurting religious sensibilities.
In connection with a FIR filed against him in the Sitapur district, the Supreme Court granted Zubair temporary bail for five days; nonetheless, he would stay in detention in accordance with a Delhi court’s judgement in a different matter. The court made it clear that the interim bail order it issued had nothing to do with a different case against the journalist that had been filed in Delhi and was only related to the First Information Report (FIR) filed in Sitapur.
Zubair was also forbidden by the apex court from using Twitter and ordered not to tamper with any type of evidence, including technological data.
