New Delhi, July 27: S Meghana, a batter, and Pooja Vastrakar, an all-rounder, both tested positive for COVID-19 and remained in the country before the team’s opening Commonwealth Games match against Australia on Friday in Birmingham.

Without the two players, the India team departed for Birmingham on Sunday morning. Sourav Ganguly, the president of the BCCI, had previously announced that one member of the touring delegation had tested positive. Prior to the Games, the team worked out at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). At the Commonwealth Games, women’s cricket is being played for the first time.

“Vastrakar and Meghana have tested positive for COVID-19 and it happened before departure. Both the players will remain in India,” an Indian Olympic Association official told PTI.

At the Edgbaston, all contests including the championship will be played. Tickets for the semifinals and championship game have already been reported as sold out by the organisers. Later on Tuesday, the team will hold its first practice session.

India’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, had previously expressed how important it was to her and the team to compete at the Commonwealth Games.
