Viswanathan Anand becomes FIDE deputy president

New Delhi, Aug 7: The legendary Indian chess player Viswanathan Anand was chosen as the organization’s vice president, with current president Arkady Dvorkovich winning a second term On Sunday.

Anand, a five-time world champion, was on Dvorkovich’s squad. Andrii Baryshpolets received 16 votes, compared to Dvorkovich’s 157, while 5 people abstained and 1 vote was deemed invalid.

Arkady Dvorkovich is reelected for a second term as President of the International Chess Federation, with 157 votes against 16.

The 44th Chess Olympiad is taking place here at the same time as the FIDE Congress, which is where the elections for the world chess organisation took place. After a successful career in which he earned several awards and trophies, Chennai-based Anand has recently reduced his tournament participation and put more of his attention on instructing.

After winning the world junior championship as a youngster, he quickly rose to fame and became India’s first-ever Grandmaster. Since then, he has represented India at the highest level of chess play worldwide.

Moreover, he amassed five global titles, the most recent of which was the world rapid title in 2017. He is guiding the Indian teams, but he is not a member of the Olympiad playing team.

He has also endorsed the work done by Dvorkovich and his group during the first term and stated his desire to contribute to the sport as an administrator. Dvorkovich had mentioned having Anand on his team before the elections.
