New Delhi, Sept 14: Taking a historic decision today, the Union Cabinet led under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the proposal to include several tribal communities in the category of Scheduled Tribes in Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, reports NewsOnAir.

Announcing the details at a presser in New Delhi, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said, “The decisions have been taken on various tribal-related issues in 5 states that have been lying pending for years.”

In Tamil Nadu, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs for the inclusion of ‘Narikoravan along with the Kurivikkaran’ community in respect of the state of Tamil Nadu through the introduction of a Bill in Parliament to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950.

In Karnataka, the Cabinet grants the Tribal status to the ‘Betta-Kuruba’ community as a synonym of ‘Kadu Kuruba’. The decision was taken in respect of the state of Karnataka through the introduction of a Bill in Parliament to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950.

It is noteworthy that 12 communities, including Binjhia, in respect of the state of Chhattisgarh were granted Tribal status through the same Scheduled Tribes Order, 1950.

Further, ‘Gonds’ along with its five sub-castes in the Bhadohi (earlier Sant Ravidas Nagar) district of Uttar Pradesh were included in the Scheduled Tribes list of UP. These decisions have brought justice to the long pending demand of these communities and a new ray of hope in their lives.

The Long Pending Reform for Himachal’s Hattee community

In a landmark development, the Cabinet granted tribal status to the Trans-Giri region of Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district. The decision marks the inclusion of the Hattee community in four blocks of the Trans-Giri region.

The Hattee are a close-knit community, who earn their living by selling home-grown crops, vegetables, meat, and wool at small-town markets known as ‘haats’. The Hattee homeland straddles the Himachal-Uttarakhand border in the basin of the Giri and Tons rivers, both tributaries of the Yamuna.
