Ranchi: A temple is being built inside the residential premises of the Bokaro Deputy Commissioner, in apparent violation of Supreme Court orders barring religious structures on public places and government land. The temple’s outer structure is fully ready, though construction has been halted for the time being due to “unavoidable reasons.”
Supreme Court Restriction on Religious Structures
The Supreme Court has prohibited the construction of religious places, including temples, mosques and churches, on public spaces and government land. In the Union of India vs Gujarat case, it issued notices to all states and Union Territories seeking details of religious structures already built.
Jharkhand’s 2009 Affidavit
In response to that notice, the Jharkhand government filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court in 2009 stating that no religious places would be built on public spaces or government land. Since then, construction of religious structures on government land has been barred in the state.
