Kerala, Sept 23: Kerala High Court initiated suo motu case on Friday against the leaders of Popular Front of India (PFI) for calling a one-day statewide bandh in Kerala, which had been banned by the Court previously.

A division bench of Justices AK Jayasankaran Nambiar and Mohammed Nias CP ruled that attacks that are now occurring during band require immediate action. As per a Kerala HC order, nobody can call for a bandh in the state without permission.

“The action of the aforementioned persons in calling for the hartal without following the procedure contemplated in our earlier order, prima facie, amounts to contempt of the directions of this Court in the order aforementioned,” the Court said.

In addition to this, Court directed the police to ensure that adequate measures are put in place to prevent any damage/destruction to public/private property of Government and citizens who do not support the call for strike.

Notably, the bandh called by the Popular Front of India (PFI) in Kerala in protest of the early-morning searches and the detention of its top leaders by government agents descended into violence on Friday. Several violent and vandalising instances have been reported around the state, and Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Alappuzha were just a few of the areas where stones have been thrown. Two police officers were earlier today injured in Kollam after allegedly being attacked by PFI supporters.
