New Delhi, Oct 16: In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that recent attempts to impose Hindi are ineffective and divisive in nature. Regarding a report provided by the Parliamentary Committee on Official Languages, MK Stalin sent a letter to PM Modi.

He asserted that continuing to push Hindi in the name of “one nation” will undermine the sense of brotherhood among those who speak different languages and have diverse cultural backgrounds and is harmful to India’s sovereignty.

According to PTI, a parliamentary panel recently proposed that Hindi and the appropriate regional languages be used as the medium of instruction in technical and non-technical higher education institutions, such as the IITs, in Hindi-speaking states.

“Recent attempts to impose Hindi are impractical and divisive in character; it puts non-Hindi-speaking people in a very disadvantageous position in many respects. This will not be acceptable not only to Tamil Nadu but also to any state that respects and values their mother tongue,” he said.

MK Stalin has harshly criticised parliamentary committee recommendations that Hindi and regional languages be used as the primary language of instruction in educational settings, including technical colleges. According to him, if the ideas are put into effect, a sizable non-Hindi speaking population will be reduced to second-class citizens in their own country and he referred to it as a “direct offensive on India’s soul.”

Number of people speaking languages other than Hindi is numerically more than Hindi-speaking people in the Indian Union. I'm sure you'd appreciate that every language has its own speciality with its uniqueness and linguistic culture: TN CM MK Stalin writes to PM Modi

“Number of people speaking languages other than Hindi is numerically more than Hindi-speaking people in the Indian Union. I am sure you would appreciate that every language has its own speciality with its uniqueness and linguistic culture,” in his letter, the Tamil Nadu CM said.

“The approach of the Union government should be to include all languages, including Tamil, in 8th Schedule, keeping in view scientific development and technological facilities and promote all languages and keep open avenues of progress in terms of education and employment equal to speakers of all languages,” the letter added.

Notably, DMK has warned to protest against the BJP-led Centre in Delhi if Hindi is thrust upon Tamil Nadu.
