New Delhi, Oct 21: The government of Odisha is preparing for significant rainfall brought on by a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. The state is probably going to get rain next week. Before moving on to Bangladesh and West Bengal, the rain is predicted to pelt the state.

The cyclone is expected to be called Sitrang at Thailand’s proposal.

Pramila Mallick, the minister of revenue and disaster management for Odisha, stated that members of the fire service, ODRAF, and NDRF are prepared for any emergency. Authorities in all districts and the coastal region have been ordered to act quickly in any situation.

“Leaves of all district magistrates, SPs and emergency department workers have been cancelled as a part of the preparedness for the possible cyclone,” PTI quoted a senior official in West Bengal.

“Yesterday’s Low-Pressure Area (LPA) over the north Andaman Sea and SE BoB persisted over the same region in the morning of 21st. To intensify into a cyclonic storm over WC and adjoining EC BoB by 24th October. Thereafter, move N-NE and reach near the WB – Bangladesh coasts on 25th Oct, skirting Odisha coast,” IMD statement reads.

In the interim, the West Bengal government has been evacuating residents from low-lying areas in various districts in an effort to minimise potential storm damage.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister, has scheduled an urgent meeting for this Friday to assess the level of readiness.
