New Delhi, Oct 21: Following her party’s historic election victory, far-right leader Giorgia Meloni was expected to be sworn in as Italy’s first female prime minister on Friday. Her anti-immigration, post-fascist Brothers of Italy party won the legislative elections on September 25, but it still needs outside assistance to form a government.

The 45-year-old from Rome is now almost expected to be asked to form a government and become the nation’s first female prime minister after two days of inter-party negotiations.

Last month, her Brothers of Italy party received 26% of the vote, while her allies Forza Italia and the far-right League only received 8% and 9% of the vote, respectively.

For Brothers of Italy, which has never held elective office, and the third-largest economy in the eurozone, her selection would mark a historic shift. According to custom, President Sergio Mattarella won’t announce her appointment until official negotiations with all parliamentary parties have taken place. Meloni went to visit Mattarella with members of her coalition on Friday; there was talk that she would be asked to form a government as early as today afternoon.
