New Delhi, Oct 22: The Election Commission has demanded an explanation from the state chief secretary and DGP after taking a harsh stance against Gujarat government officials’ failure to send a compliance report on the transfer and posting of employees prior to the Assembly elections.

Sources cited a letter the Election Commission sent to Gujarat’s chief secretary on Friday to claim that despite repeated requests, neither the chief secretary nor the director general of police had submitted compliance reports regarding the transfer and posting of a particular category of officials in advance of the elections.

ECI has also directed the Gujarat Chief Secretary and DGP to explain the circumstances as to why the compliance report has not been furnished so far even after the lapse of the stipulated time limit despite issuing the reminder in the matter.

A source quoted the letter as saying that they have now been requested to explain the reasons why the compliance reports have not yet been provided “so far even after the expiration of prescribed time limit despite issuing the reminder in the subject.”

The letters about the posting and transfer of employees were sent to Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

Notably, election dates for Gujarat have not yet been declared, while Himachal Pradesh will vote on November 12. Officials stationed in their home districts and those who have spent three years in a district in the last four years should be transferred, the panel had instructed the two state governments.
