New Delhi, Oct 25: At least seven people died in Bangladesh after Cyclone Sitrang tore through parts of the heavily populated nation late Monday, according to media estimates. Nikhil Sarker, a spokeswoman for the disaster ministry control centre, was cited by the news agency AFP as saying that the deaths were recorded from the districts of Barguna, Narail, Sirajganj, and the island district of Bhola.

On Monday, thousands of people and animals on the Cox’s Bazar coast were relocated to cyclone shelters as a result of the bad weather brought on by cyclone Sitrang. Around 9:00 pm, the cyclone made landfall along the Chittagong-Barisal coast (8:30 pm IST).

People were advised to contact the Union Parishad Chairman, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, or the control room of the district commissioner’s office for assistance, and a monitoring cell by Bangladesh’s Fire Service and Civil Defense was operational.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Sitrang has weakened into a Deep Depression and lay centered at 2.30pm IST over Bangladesh about 90 km northeast of Dhaka, 60 km north-northwest of Agartala.

“The system was likely to weaken into a depression during the next three hours and further into a well-marked low pressure area during the subsequent six hours,” it added.
