New Delhi, Nov 11: The Delhi High Court dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) suit opposing the appointment of Justice DY Chandrachud of the Supreme Court as Chief Justice of India.

Observing that the petition was not a public interest case but rather a “publicity oriented” plea, a bench consisting of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad also imposed Rs. 1 lakh on the petitioner.

Sanjeev Kumar Tiwari, the leader of a group called the Gram Uday Foundation, filed the petition.

“Present petition has only been filed only to gain publicity without there being any material,” the Court said.

A similar appeal against the appointment of Justice Chandrachud as Chief Justice of India was also rejected by the Supreme Court just last week. On November 9, Wednesday, Justice DY Chandrachud took the oath of office as the 50th Chief Justice of India.

He received his oath of office from Droupadi Murmu, President of India, at a ceremony conducted at Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning at ten o’clock. The former Chief Justice of India, UU Lalit, retired on Tuesday, November 8, and was replaced by Justice Chandrachud.
