New Delhi, Nov 15: Novak Djokovic has been given a visa to compete in the Australian Open in January 2023, according to Tuesday reports from the public broadcaster ABC and the Guardian Australia.

Djokovic, a Serbian, was expelled from Australia in January before the Grand Slam because he refused to get vaccinated. Until 2025, the previous world No. 1 was prohibited from entering the nation.

The Immigration Minister Andrew Giles reportedly overturned the prohibition, according to the ABC, allowing Djokovic to compete. The Australian immigration ministry’s spokesperson failed to respond to the reports.

Craig Tiley, the director of the Australian Open, stated this month that Djokovic would be welcome in January if he could obtain a visa, but Tennis Australia was powerless to advocate on his behalf.

Australia removed a requirement that travellers to other countries disclose whether they had received their COVID vaccination in July, and Djokovic stated in October that he had received “positive signs” regarding the progress of efforts to lift his ban.
