New Delhi, Nov 22: Following the shooting that left six people dead, including a forest official from Assam, in Mukroh in West Jaintia Hills on the border between the two states, Meghalaya has shut down mobile internet access in seven of the state’s districts for the next 48 hours.
According to a statement from the Home (Police) Department of the Meghalayan government, mobile internet/data services have been suspended in seven districts of Meghalaya as of today at 10:30 am.
Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, announced today that a total of six people, including five Meghalaya residents and one Assam Forest Guard, died in the event.
“The injured have been rushed to hospital and an inquest is being conducted. An FIR has been registered by Meghalaya police,” the Chief Minister said.
CVD Diengdoh, Secretary to the Home (Police) Department, Meghalaya, has put this notification into force to prevent the abuse of media (WhatsApp and social media like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) to disturb peace and serenity in the state of Meghalaya and to maintain law and order.
The Meghalayan districts of West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills will all be without telecommunications and social media access.
The Indian Telegraph Act of 1885’s relevant provisions as well as Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) would be used to punish those who breach the order, according to the announcement.
Further details awaited.
