New Delhi, Dec 2: The Uttar Pradesh police on Friday booked Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan after allegedly making an inappropriate comment during the campaign for the Rampur byelection.

Anuj Kumar Chaudhary, the Rampur deputy superintendent of police, reported that Shehnaaz Begum had given the police an audio recording of the public gathering at Shuta Khana. He stated that an investigation had begun.

Based on the woman’s complaint, the police have booked him under Section 394(b), 354 A, 353 (A), 504, 505 (2), 509 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 125 of the Representation of the People Act.

According to reports, Azam Khan made the claim while supporting SP candidate Asim Raja in the upcoming byelection for the Rampur Assembly Seat.

Anuj Kumar Chaudhary, the deputy superintendent of police in Rampur, reported that a number of women offended by Khan’s remarks had filed a complaint against him along with the audio recording.

A probe into this matter is underway.

Notably, for giving provocative speeches and using indecent language, Azam Khan was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment by the court after which his assembly membership was also cancelled. Due to this Rampur Nagar assembly by-election is being held. Rampur will go to the polls on December 5 for the Mainpuri seat, which fell vacant after SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav died on October 10.
