New Delhi, Dec 8: Rakesh Kumar, a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Himachal Pradesh assembly election on Thursday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said.

Rakesh Kumar of the BJP won the seat with a total of 29432 votes, according to the ECI. By the time the votes in the constituency had been counted, Congress candidate Sohan Lal had amassed 21307 votes, while Abhishek Thakur, an independent, had received 14704.

According to the most recent ECI statistics, the BJP is currently in the lead in 26 seats after winning one of the 68 assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh. Even so, given that Congress continues to hold a 38-seat majority, the competition appears fierce.

In Himachal Pradesh, three assembly seats are still being held by independent candidates.

Hiteshwar Singh, a rebel BJP member who had previously been leading the Himachal assembly race as an independent candidate from Banjar, is now in second place after Khimi Ram, a Congress candidate, has received the most votes so far with 13273, followed by Surender Shourie, a BJP candidate, with 12261.

Hoshyar Singh from Dehra, another rebel BJP candidate, continues to lead the race with 16390, followed by Dr. Rajesh Sharma of the Congress with 9381 and Ramesh Chand of the BJP with 8198.

With 21715 votes, BJP rebel KL Thakur is also in the lead in Nalagarh.
