New Delhi, Dec 23: Former JNU student Umar Khalid walked out of Tihar jail on Friday after getting bail to attend his sister’s wedding.  A Delhi court on December 12 granted one-week interim bail to Khalid to attend his sister’s wedding. As per the order, he will have to surrender on December 30.

“Umar Khalid has been released from Tihar Jail at 7 am today after he was granted interim bail for seven days to attend his sister’s marriage,” said a jail official.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted relief to Khalid from December 23 to December 30. This is for the first time Khalid will walk out of Tihar Jail since his arrest in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act [UAPA] case connected with the northeast Delhi riots.

Khalid and several others were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly being the “masterminds” of the February 2020 riots in Northeast Delhi, which left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.

The violence erupted during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Earlier this month, Delhi’s Karkardooma court acquitted Umar Khalid along with United Against Hate member Khalid Saifi, in one of the cases related to the 2020 riots. The two were released on bail in this case, but had to remain in prison in connection with different cases.

Khalid’s bail plea was dismissed by the Delhi High Court in October saying the anti-CAA, NRC protests were prima-facie orchestrated at various conspiratorial meetings which were attended by Khalid.
