Jamshedpur, Dec 23: Acting on a tip-off police nabbed a 28-year-old youth with brown sugar from the crowded Sakchi market on Friday morning.
Identified as Sandeep Kumar Shrivastav, the youth was himself down with the influence of the narcotic drugs but was also over a dozen packets of the brown sugar that the police seized.
Sakchi police station OC, Sanjay Singh said the youth whom they arrested with 14 packets of brown sugar is not in a condition to speak.
“The youth could just tell us about his name and nothing else as he seemed down with a heavy dose of the brown sugar. It could not be established whether the accused had possessed over a dozen of the drugs for selling them or for his own consumption. We have sent the youth for a medical examination before forwarding him to the judicial custody,” said Singh while talking to this correspondent.
Significantly, the peddling of brown sugar continues to spread menacingly across the steel city despite a concerted effort by the district police.
Till mid-2020, brown sugar was available in the Muslim Basti at Adityapur in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district as a lady drug kingpin, Dolly Perveen was running the racket from there. But after her arrest in July 2020 and continuous pressure mounted by the Seraikela-Kharsawan police, Dolly’s lieutenant Mohammad Asraf had shifted the sale of drugs to the steel city.
Moreover, as the policing against brown sugar racket in the steel city was not so effective during the tenure of the erstwhile senior SP, M Tamil Vanan, Asraf succeeded to spread the network of drug-peddling in most parts of the city.
The district police now seem to be determined to curb the sale of brown sugar from the steel city.
SP (City) K Vijay Shankar said that they are trying to reach the main source of the brown sugar supply to the steel city.
“We are in close coordination with the police of some neighbouring states to reach out to the source of the brown sugar supply to the city. We are hopeful of nailing the main supplier soon,” said Vijay Shankar while talking to lagatar24.com.
A senior police officer pointed out that another youth other than Sandeep Kumar Shrivastav is now being interrogated here, adding that the police may crack the racket of the brown sugar supply and sale soon.
