India Open 2023: Lakshya Sen beats HS Prannoy

Satwik-Chirag, Treesa-Gayatri pairs to reach second round

New Delhi, Jan 17: Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen defeated H.S. Prannoy in the men’s singles first round match in straight games, 21-14, 21-15, in the men’s singles on Tuesday. Lakshya, the reigning champion, will play Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in the second round.

The men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won after Lakshya did on Court 1. In order to advance to the second round, Satwik and Chirag, the defending champions, defeated the all-Scottish team of Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley 21-13, 21-15. They will now face the victor of the match between Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi of China and Ben Lane and Sean Vendy of England.

The Chinese pair had been defeated by the Indian team in the Malaysia Open quarterfinals the previous week. In the Commonwealth Games final of 2022, Satwik and Chirag defeated Lane and Vendy.

On Court 2, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated Margot Lambert and Anne Tran of France 22-20, 17-21, and 21-18 in the women’s doubles match. The sixth-seeded Chinese team of Zhang Shu Xian and Zheng Yu will face Treesa and Gayatri in the second round after they overcame the local team of Haritha Manazhiyil and Ashna Roy 21-4, 21-2 in the first matchup.

As Carolina Marin easily advanced to the second round of the India Open Super 750 on Tuesday in New Delhi, Kento Momota’s dismal run on the BWF World Tour continued.

The former world no. 1 Japanese player Momota lost in the first round in his first competition of 2023. Rasmus Gemke defeated the two-time world champion in straight games. In 49 minutes, the 20th-ranked Dane defeated Momota 21-15, 21-11.

This was Momota’s third straight loss in the opening round. Nozomi Okuhara was the second Japanese player to lose in the first round of the women’s singles competition. Former world champion Okuhara lost 21-13, 21-18 versus former Olympic champion Marin.

On Wednesday, Marin will compete against Ratchanok Intanon in the round of 16.

With three titles, Intanon was the most successful player at the India Open. He defeated Malaysian Goh Jin Wei in just 27 minutes, winning 21-13, 21-11. Sikki Reddy and Shruti Mishra from India lost the women’s doubles match.
