New, Delhi, Jan 19: Former RBI governor Raghuam Rajan passed a statement on Rahul Gandhi’s ‘pappu’ image in the public and media on Wednesday.
“Rahul Gandhi is in no way a pappu (fool) and is a smart man,” former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan said when asked about the Congress leader’s political image in public.
“I think the image is unfortunate. I have spent close to a decade interacting with them on many fronts. He is in no way a pappu,” he said.
He further mentioned that he walked with Rahul Gandhi on Bharat Jodo Yatra since he stands for the values the Yatra stood for. Rajan who had joined the Wayanad MP during the Congress’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Rajasthan in December, said this on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
Talking about the Indian economy, Rajan had also said 2023 will be difficult for the Indian economy as also for the rest of the world and the country failed to ‘generate reforms’ needed for growth.

On Wednesday, the former RBI governor said it is too early to think that India will substitute China when it comes to influencing global economic growth. However, the situation may change in the future as India is already the world’s fifth-largest economy, it is growing and has the potential to keep expanding.
He also criticised the BJP government for policy measures such as the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes and the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST).
