Dhanbad, Feb 21: Rattled by an infant’s death, all four members of a family tried to commit suicide in the Pandey Barwa area under the Barwadda police station of the district on Tuesday morning.
The victim’s family members identified as Tipan Mahto, his wife Dukhia Devi, and daughters Geeta Devi and Sangeeta Devi were admitted at Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) in critical condition.
They reportedly took the drastic step following the death of a three-month-old infant, the son of elder daughter Geeta Devi yesterday at Kolkata Howrah railway station. The infant was suffering from pneumonia.
Neighbours found them lying unconscious when Tipan and his family members did not come out of the house in the morning. They immediately informed the police who got them admitted to a medical college hospital.
Dukhia Devi, under treatment at a medical college hospital, told media persons that they had gone to Kolkata for treatment of their grandson (daughter Geeta Devi’s son) but the infant died as they reached Howrah railway station. All family members were upset about the death of an infant. They arranged pesticide at night and ate all in the morning today.
The officer in charge of Barwadda police station Bikram Singh told that police are investigating the incident. The victim’s family members would be interrogated after they recovered at the hospital.
