Kolkata, April 4: The Calcutta High Court ordered the West Bengal government to submit a report on recent clashes in Rishra, Hooghly district, as lawyers for senior BJP politician Suvendu Adhikari brought up the issue before a division Bench on Tuesday.

The opposition leader in the state assembly, Adhikari, was instructed by the court to submit an additional affidavit on the incident.

On Monday night, fights outside railway gate number 4 in Rishra caused an impact on train service on the Howrah-Bardhaman main line.

As Adhikari’s lawyer brought up the issue before the court, a division bench chaired by Acting Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam ordered the State administration to submit a brief report on the most recent instance of violence in Rishra.

The petition will be considered on April 5 together with a PIL filed by Adhikari, as instructed by the bench, which also included Judge Hiranmay Bhattacharyya.

After an altercation between two groups of people during a Ram Navami parade in Rishra on Sunday night, the police imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC and shut off internet access in the region.

The Bench had ordered the State administration to submit a thorough report on occurrences of violence at Shibpur in Howrah city and efforts taken to preserve calm in the affected region by April 5 after giving the directive on Monday.

The State administration was required to present CCTV and video material pertaining to the violent episodes by the Court. The judge ordered the police to deploy appropriately as needed.

The decision was made on Monday in response to a PIL filed by Adhikari, who also pleaded for the deployment of central forces to ensure Shibpur’s security. Adhikari had requested that the NIA look into claims that explosives were thrown during the unrest in Shibpur.

Advocate General S.N. Mookherjee, speaking on behalf of the State, stated that things are under control in Shibpur.
