New Delhi, April 19: India has surpassed China to become the country with the largest population, with 142.86 crore people, according to the most recent UN statistics.

According to the UN world population dashboard, China now ranks second in terms of population with 142.57 crore people.

A recent UNFPA research states that 25% of India’s population is under the age of 14, 18% is between the ages of 10 and 19, 26% is between the ages of 10 and 24, 68% is between the ages of 15 and 64, and 7% is older than 65.

The UN began compiling population figures in 1950, and this is the first time that India has topped the list of most populous nations.

As its workforce ages and fertility rates decrease, China is in danger of experiencing a demographic decline. Although official attempts have so far failed to reverse the decrease, certain regions have also announced measures to increase birth rates.

India has not conducted a census since 2011, hence there are no fresh official statistics available on its population size.

The decennial census in India was scheduled to take place in 2021 but was postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

According to estimates from several organisations, India’s population would continue to grow for about three decades before reaching a peak of 165 crores, at which point it will begin to decline.

By mid-2023, according to the latest UN estimates, there will be 8.045 billion people on the planet.

According to additional UN data released in July that predicted how the world’s population will develop between now and 2100, other countries, primarily in Europe and Asia, should expect a demographic decline over the coming decades.
