Death toll rises to five in Bhiwandi building collapse in Maharashtra

Thane, April 30: Five people have now died as a result of the collapse of the Bhiwandi building, according to a statement from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

On Saturday afternoon, a three-story structure collapsed in the Bhiwandi neighbourhood of Maharashtra’s Thane district, burying numerous persons beneath the rubble.

“Death toll rises to 5 in the Bhiwandi building collapse incident in Thane, Maharashtra. Further rescue operations are underway,” an NDRF official said.

Teams from the Fire Brigade, Police, TDRF and NDRF are on the scene in the meantime to rescue persons who are entangled in the rubble.

Indrapal Patil, a builder, was held in this respect, according to a statement from Thane Police on Sunday, and a case has been filed under the appropriate provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“Police have registered a case against the builder. The builder Indrapal Patil has been detained by Thane police. A case has been registered under Sections 304 (2), 337, 338 and 42 of IPC,” an official statement said.

Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, previously paid a visit to the Indira Gandhi Hospital and met with those injured on Saturday night.

The CM has instructed that the injured’s medical care would be done at government expense.

Following the incident, he announced financial support of Rs 5 lakh per person to the family members of those killed in the Bhiwandi building collapse, according to an official statement.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the police, the fire brigade, and other rescue personnel were also given instructions by CM Shinde to conduct the rescue operations effectively.
