New Delhi, June 4: A PIL has been filed to the Supreme Court asking for an expert panel led by a retired judge of the high court to investigate the triple railway tragedy in Balasore, Odisha.

Over 1,000 people have been injured, and 288 people have died as a result of the Balasore train tragedy, which involved two passenger trains and a goods train.

In order to protect public safety, the PIL further requested guidelines and instructions for the urgent installation of the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) System, also known as the KAVACH Protection System, by Indian Railways.

In the event that the loco pilot fails to apply breaks, “Kavach” controls the train’s speed automatically.

“Immediately to set up an expert commission headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court consisting of technical members to analyse and review the current risk and safety parameters in the railway system and to suggest systematic safety modifications for strengthening Railway safety mechanism and submit its report in two months to this court,” the PIL filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari said.

According to the initial investigation into the incident, a goods train, the Coromandel Express, and the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express were all involved in a three-way accident at Bahanaga Bazar Station in the Balasore district.

The accident on Friday night resulted in the derailment and significant damage of up to 17 coaches from these two passenger trains.
