Jamshedpur, June 9: A 27-year-old man was trampled to death at his residential premises under the Chakulia thana area in the Ghatsila sub-division on Friday.

The incident has taken place at Mayurnachni village in Sonahatu panchayat of Chakulia close to the Bengal border about 100 km away from here in the wee hours today.

Identified as Sawan Baske, the victim was in deep slumber at his home along with his wife and two children. Having felt pressure for urinating, he came out of his room informing his wife Luckimuni at around 2.00 am and started going a little distance away from the house.

But as soon as he stepped out of his room, he was trampled by a tusker which was standing on his residential premises itself.

In the commotion, Luckimuni and the children woke up and found Sawan lying on the ground.  As the elephant was still present on the residential premises belligerently,  Luckimuni ran away to a neighbour’s house along with her children.

Sometime later Sawan who was fatally injured succumbed to his injury having gulped a glass of water from a neighbour’s hand.  The wild elephant had by then disappeared from the scene before a crowd of anxious villagers had gathered there.

The lone tusker that killed Sawan Baske had fallen apart from a herd of tuskers anchored in the Chakulia jungle.

Jamshedpur divisional forest officer, Mamta Priyadarshi confirmed the elephant trampling death in a Chakulia village.

“The forest department has paid the victim’s widow Rs 25,000 as part of a compensation package of Rs four lakhs. The remaining amount will be paid soon, ” the Jamshedpur DFO said while talking to lagatar24.com.

The senior forest department official said separate herds of elephants have come over to Chakulia and Dhalbhumgarh areas from Bengal and are creating immense problems here. She stated that the forest department is trying to ward off the migratory elephants while making efforts to save the lives and property of the people living here.
