Agartala, July 4: An individual carrying over 276 gm of heroin, worth Rs 1.1 crore on the international market, was seized by the Assam Rifles and police in a combined operation, an official said on Tuesday.
Based on information about drug trade, the Radhanagar Battalion of the Assam Rifles and police officers from the Jirighat Police Station of Assam’s Chachar district conducted a joint operation on Monday.
“The operation party apprehended one individual along with 276.1 gms of Heroin with an approximate cost of Rs. 1.1 Cr from general area Lalpani, under Jirighat PS, Cachar District, Assam,” the Assam Rifles official said.
The source stated that Jirighat Police Station received the person and the confiscated materials later for additional investigation and legal actions.
In a successful operation earlier on Sunday, Assam Rifles (East) found 150 bags of illicit areca nuts in the area of Melbuk in Zokhawthar, along with 33 grammes of heroin and one worth Rs. 1.07 crore.
The suspect was later found and turned over to the Champhai Police Station, and Customs Department, Zokhawthar for further legal processes.
Additionally, on June 30, Assam Rifles discovered heroin and cigarettes of foreign origin worth Rs 2.07 crore in the Champhai district’s Zote and Zokhawthar.
On June 30, the Serchhip Battalion of the 23 Sector Assam Rifles, which is overseen by the Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), achieved a recovery. Based on particular intelligence, a team made up of the Assam Rifles, the Customs Department and other sister agencies carried out the operation.
“In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), recovered 125 grams of heroin no 4 and 92 Cases of foreign origin cigarettes with a total cost of Rs 2.07 Cores in general area Zote and Zokhawthar Champhai on 30 Jun 2023,” read the official statement.
