New Delhi: The Congress party has expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will agree to a detailed parliamentary debate on China during the upcoming monsoon session. The party has been demanding such a discussion for the past five years, citing mounting national security and economic concerns.

Jairam Ramesh Criticizes PM’s 2020 Statement on Galwan

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh marked the fifth anniversary of PM Modi’s controversial statement following the Galwan clash, recalling how the Prime Minister had said, “No one has intruded into our border, nor is anyone present inside.” Ramesh posted on X that this remark came just four days after 20 Indian soldiers were martyred in Galwan on June 15, 2020, and described it as “deeply regrettable.” He added that the situation ultimately concluded with a bilateral agreement on October 21, 2024.

Trade Deficit With China At Record High

Ramesh raised concerns over India’s growing economic dependence on China, especially in critical sectors such as telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. He noted that India’s trade deficit with China reached a record $99.2 billion in 2024-25. “India’s exports to China are now lower than they were in 2013-14, despite the rupee weakening significantly,” he said.

Foreign Minister’s Remark Reflects Economic Surrender

Referring to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s earlier comments — “They are a big economy. What can I do? As a smaller economy, can I fight a larger one?” — Ramesh said such remarks reflect an economic surrender to Chinese power. He added that China’s strategic influence was evident in Pakistan’s military actions during Operation Sindoor.

Call for National Consensus and Parliamentary Discussion

Congress reiterated its call for a broad national consensus to address the dual threat posed by China — militarily and economically. “We have been demanding a full debate on China in Parliament. It hasn’t happened yet, but we hope PM Modi will agree this time,” Ramesh said.
