Supreme Court expresses concern over death of cheetahs in MP’s Kuno National Park

New Delhi, July 20: The Supreme Court asked the Centre on Thursday to take appropriate action in response to the cheetah deaths in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park. The top court was nonetheless informed by the Centre that it is typical for 50% of translocation deaths to occur.

During a hearing on the subject of cheetah deaths, a bench of Justices BR Gavai, JB Pardiwala and Prashant Kumar Mishra made these observations.

The court inquired of the Centre as to why they were making a prestige issue out of the deaths of two cheetahs last week.

The purpose of keeping the cheetahs in one location was also questioned by the court. The court advised the Centre to take some positive steps.

The government’s representative, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, told the judge that they are giving the project their full attention and efforts. She informed the court that 50% of translocation-related deaths are typical.

The court wanted to know if they were facing respiratory or kidney problems, or if the climate was suitable for them. ASG said that the deaths were being caused by the infections.

The court mentioned that one of the sanctuaries in Rajasthan is well-known for its leopard population and recommended the government to take this factor into consideration.
